Erectile Dysfunction Q & A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a medical condition that affects the normal sexual response of men. With ED, you’re not able to get or keep an erection, and you may notice an overall decrease in sexual desire.

ED is not a concerning condition in and of itself, but it may be a sign that you have other underlying health conditions that need attention. ED may be a symptom of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or vascular disease, and may indicate that you carry a higher risk for depression, infertility, and stroke.

Aside from the emotional and relational impact of not getting or keeping an erection, it’s important for your overall health that you follow up if you have trouble getting or keeping an erection.

What causes ED?

The natural fluctuation of male hormones, especially after you reach age 40, is a primary cause for ED. As you age, the male hormone, testosterone, naturally diminishes. This causes a decrease in sexual desire and response.

Other, more concerning causes for ED may include:

  • Diabetes
  • Clogged arteries
  • Blood clots
  • Impaired circulation
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Alcohol or substance abuse
  • High blood pressure
  • Stressful lifestyle
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Nerve damage or nerve-related disorders
  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or enlarged prostate

Obesity, smoking, and side effects of some drugs may also put you at higher risk for ED. A healthy diet, active lifestyle, weight loss, and quitting smoking can lessen your risks for ED and may improve your symptoms.
