Telemedicine Q & A

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a type of health care that is offered remotely when you and Dr. Valentine are not in the same location. Using your smartphone, you can have access to Dr. Valentine’s expertise and experience without having to go to his office.

Telemedicine uses a secure video-chatting service to connect you both so that your personal and health information is protected while you’re able to see each other and interact.

Dr. Valentine can do many assessments over video-chat by asking you questions and having you perform certain activities, like walking, breathing deeply, or showing him a wound that is being treated. He can dispense advice and present ongoing treatment plans during your telemedicine session.

Who is a good candidate for telemedicine?

This type of service can be especially helpful for those who:

  • Travel often
  • Are elderly or feeble
  • Are working adults
  • Need medication refills
  • Need a quick follow-up
  • Just had surgery or are still recovering from illness
  • Do not have reliable transportation
  • Have child care or elder care challenges
  • Aren’t able to physically get to the doctor’s office
  • Are rural or live far from the doctor’s office

In order to qualify for telemedicine with Dr. Valentine, an initial consultation and workup must be done in the office.

What conditions can be monitored using telemedicine?

Not every condition can or should be treated using telemedicine. Some conditions that may be good for use with telemedicine are acute and chronic conditions that need ongoing monitoring or follow-up, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Skin disorders
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Minor injuries
  • Wound care

In some cases, Dr. Valentine may provide you with equipment such as a heart monitor or blood pressure machine, to help give accurate information that can be easily shared during a telemedicine session.

How can telemedicine help with weight loss?

Dr. Valentine uses telemedicine to support your weight loss efforts through weekly check-ins for both regular and accelerated weight loss programs. During telemedicine sessions, you may share information such as:

  • Weekly weight
  • Weekly dietary evaluation
  • Any questions you may have
  • Any new information you need
  • Any behavior or habit-based problems you’re having

You may also use telemedicine to meet with your certified nutrition and behavioral therapists, who are an important part of your weight loss team.
